Well researched and written,
This review is from: The Heirs Of The Prophet Muhammad: And the Roots of the Sunni-Shia Schism (Paperback)
This is perhaps one of the best books on Islam that we in the west will be fortunate to read; it is balanced, nuanced, well researched and above all, well written. The sections on the Prophet have been written by Mr Rogerson before, however the following sections on the first four Caliphs offer a detailed, excellent review of the events that unfolded until 30 years after the Prophet's death. The only possible criticism is that no specific Sunni-Shia viewpoints on those events are mentioned (for example how the actual achievements of the Caliphs are viewed by the two sides); but that is not as much Mr Rogerson's job as it is for the rest of us interested in the subject to find out.
