This review is from: Wiz-War Board Game (Toy)
What a great game! Was a little unsure at first, Tom Vassel's review was not the most encouraging, but then I always take them with a large pinch of salt. The pedigree was promising, first released in 1985, Tom Jolly designed it and Fantasy Flight put this edition (8th) togeather. A game that has been around that long with multiple websites dedicated to it, it's got to be worth a punt.
At first I couldn't get into the rules and the game sat in the cupboard for a few weeks. Most games I like to read through all the rules first, have a practice run or two then get some friends around and thrash out a first game. Wiz-War I just couldn't get through the rules, it's not that they're too complex, it's just for me they needed a different approach. Play the game was the key to Wiz War for me. The rules are actually very simple with just three stages of play, check and manage what is going on, move & cast spells, collect or discard spells, and that's it. How the spells and attacks work is more complex and that you learn from playing the game.
When playing the game the rules make total sense and the game play is just brilliant. Yes a little chaotic but loads of action and great fun whether it's two, three or four player game. The optional rules are well worth putting in place once you are familiar with the game and every game is totally different.
A very well designed, produced and thought through game. Definately in my top five. Thanks Tom Jolly and FF!
