Gavrilov, protege of Richter...need more be said?Well,maybe--he may not be perfect, who is?But the man is(was,he's retired now,at his peak)as close to inspired genius as you'll find.Perhaps a little too fast for comfort(his, that is) when tackling the quicker variations, but there's never a dull moment, even in the Black Pearl variation, monumental as that is.You can't say that for everyone(Hewitt),and if you want to hear a virtuoso playing the Goldbergs, look no further. As good as Perahia may be,there are a mere 3 for my money,Tureck (the one on Vai),Gould(either),or this.Good price from marketplace,too...the originally published 1993 version is going for about £30 now!Mine, less than a fiver.

Neil Ford says:
Gavrilov was never a protégé of Richter. As Andrei tells us in his memoirs, it was convenient for the Soviet regime to make this story up.
