This review is from: The Essential Bach Choir (Paperback)
I had heard some of Joshua Rifkin's cantata recordings before reading Andrew Parrott's The Essential Bach Choir, but this book was simply convincing. I am glad that Parrott wrote it. Since then I have listened many times Paul McCreesh's one-per-part recording of St Matthew Passion, and to me it is clearly number one - no balance problems whatsoever. Having one singer per a vocal part also produces natural tempi. In most recordings - in fact all except this one - the opening chorus is too slow and somehow clumsy. That doesn't prevent me from enjoying other recordings made with a small choir and period instruments.
