Excellent chance to see Arnold Vosloo in a pre Mummy role,
This review is from: Progeny [DVD] (DVD)For fans of The Mummy (arguably THE movie of 1999, easily holding its own against the long awaited Star Wars prequel) this is an excellent opportunity to see the Mummy himself, Arnold Vosloo, in a starring role of a very different kind made in the same year.
Dr Craig Barton (Arnold Vosloo) is happily married to Sherry, and is already established as a gifted surgeon, all that is missing from his life are children. He and his wife desperately want a family of their own and have been trying to conceive. The movie opens with the couple making love, before being engulfed in a brilliant light. They both wake up two hours later with no recollection of the events of those missing hours. Sherry later discovers that she is pregnant and the couple are delighted to finally be starting their family but Dr Barton becomes uneasy and through sessions with a physchiatrist who uses regression hypnosis, becomes convinced that Sherry was abducted by aliens and that the baby is not his or even human.
I really enjoyed seeing this movie, it may not be the best of its type but Vosloo is excellent, as is Jillian McWhirter as Sherry. They make the characters at once believable and sympathetic, so that the viewer cares what happens to them. The DVD extras are also worth the cost of the DVD itself, which given its budget price is already excellent value for money. There is the usual chapter search and original theatre trailer, but it is the behind the scenes interviews with the stars which make the DVD a worthwhile purchase. A thoroughly (at times) silly, suspenceful, enjoyable wee movie. Great for an evening in front of the TV with a pizza and some friends. Go on, treat yourself :-)
