3.0 out of 5 stars The angels have lost their bite, 29 Jun 2010
This review is from: Doctor Who - Series 5, Volume 2 [DVD] (DVD)
I know, I know, I wrote a good review after having seen the first episode of the new series because I had enjoyed it and because Matt Smith had managed to impress me when I actually thought he would be insipid.I still think Matt makes a very good doctor (although I do not agree with people saying that David Tennant is already forgotten. How could he be? I just have to watch him grin in any one of the few excellent episodes he was in and the magic is rekindled. He was a superb doctor, funny, charismatic and attractive!) So I have no quarrel with Matt Smith who has done a very good job and brought something slightly Peter Panish but very endearing as well to his own doctor. No, my problem is with all the promises that are not fulfilled, the recurring use of former brilliant ideas just because new ones haven't emerged. (But I'm not disputing the fact that brilliant ideas must be hell to come by)The episode with the angels, what a laugh!!! Where was the fear, where was the tension, where were the beautiful tight plot and amazing twists we had had with Blink??? Absolutely nowhere! It was verbose and on the whole boring, as was most of the series.I don't think the writers delivered the goods at all! I realize that we expect a lot from them, but before, it did sometimes happen, there were gems among the more 'ordinary' stories. This time I waited and waited and expected and hoped... but nothing materialized!
