This review is from: UFO: Aftershock (PC DVD) (Video Game)
Although this is a sequel to UFO AFtermath don't worry if you haven't plyaed it of another of the much older XCom games because it's set as a stand alone with no knowledge of the previous goings on.
The game minimum spec is not good enough to enjoy this one. It will stagger and hang a lot. The recommended spec is a 2GHz CPU, ATI RAdeon 9800 or Nvdia 6600, 4GB free HDD and Win XP with DirectX 9. If you want hassle free play you must have as a minimum the recommended spec.
A patch is planned to sort out many of the very annoying bugs. Some of the bugs are critical and will crash your PC but it appears most are already being addressed. Read the Aftershock forum for more details.
For those who have played some of the previous games this is great fun. There are four races down on Earth (you're stuck up on a Laputa orbiting Earth) - normal Humans, Cyborgs, Psionics and Cultists. Cultists worship the aliens and you're best avoiding them until you've the tech to fight them on an even level.
You start off in the game with some recovered Reticulean weaponry, no knowledge of Earth weapons and equipment or or how Earth used to be. So early on you are dependent on what is you recover off the kill enemies in the missions on Earth. Eventually you get a main base, become recognised by the various factions, gains resources (readily consumed when you need to join the main base to others elsewhere by the tracks). Balancing resources means keeping in with the 3 friendly factions and trading or helping out with rescues/bug clearance etc. As you recover lost knowledge through research (by the way only certain research can be underatken on the Laputa so be warned <g>) you discover a very large spacecraft heading toward Earth. I've played 30 hours so far and it's 2 game days out.
I highly recommend this game. It didn't get 5 stars because of the pre-existing bugs on release.
