For the amateur baker only!!,
This review is from: The Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook (Hardcover)
Preordered this book from amazon. Love the pictures, colours and the cupcakes but that's it. The recipes in every section are more or less the same just adding the ingredient which says the name: vanilla cupcakes - well egg, flour, sugar, milk, butter and VANILLA. I dont do ever frosting because 300g of icing sugar!!! Are you mad? Do you know how much calorie that is?
Certainly the section 'Cakes' is the most disappointing.Starting with the hummingbird cake: 300g sugar, 300ml sunflower oil, 300g flour and two quanities of cream cheese! Of course that is not the whole recipy but I am already spinning. The worst is the Coconut meringue cake which has 500g flour and 430g sugar! covered in 6-7 egg whites with another 320g of sugar. Heavens, this is not a book for healthy people or want to stay healthy.
Well yes, the book is very American. Heavy ingredients, very simple recipes and not much showing how versatile baking can be.
Of course cakes are not that healthy in general but believe me there are so many great recipes which are much better than in this book.

It's a book about baking - I'm not sure why you're so appalled that this book isn't healthy?! What were you expecting, it's a cake-baking book not a healthy eating book! All things in moderation...

Cassie's friend says:
I bake when I want a treat, something indulgent, not when I want to be healthy. How can you buy a baking book and then be outraged at how unhealthy it is.

Laura Dean says:
Cakes do include large quantities of flour, butter and sugar, so I'm not quite sure why you were shocked by your encounter with this book of cake recipes!
