2.0 out of 5 stars An anime full of tired cliches and character stereotypes., 29 Oct 2008
This review is from: Elfen Lied - The Complete Collection [DVD] (DVD)
Upon reading other, praising reviews I was led to believe that this anime was a masterpiece of the genre. However, I was severely disappointed.

The story centres around young girls who are cursed with genetic mutations which render them weapons against mankind. Chaos ensues...

Right from the outset, the viewer is bombarded with relentless and cheap sexual references. Whilst this is endearingly comedic in a series like Tenchi, it only serves to detract from any emotional connection you could potentially feel for the characters of this series.

The characters conform to all the typical stereotypes 'cute and innocent young girl who's only word is her own name' and 'adolescent boy, innocent and caring who can't help but be a clutz and find himself in inevitable sexual predicaments.'

All this, with some excessive violence, bland and unimaginative dialogue thrown in for good measure make for a pretty tiresome watch.

It is a shame as Elfen Lied has an interesting premise and maybe in the right hands it could have been a better anime, but in a world filled with groundbreaking new productions Elfen Lied can't help but be mundane.

Well, it does go to show that opinions really do differ wildly. I also thought it likely that I wouldn't like it, yet after reading the review and viewing three episodes on line I decided to buy it. Brilliant! I think it is because it is just so different that it gets away with all that it does - That and the fact that it is animated of course. Each to their own... :o)

Completely agree. Can't believe this had so many avid followers, I do have respect for everyone else's opinion but basically from the first horrible, to quote the reviewer, "inevitable sexual predicament", we literally stop the film right there and did more than just roll our eyes. There are a lot of films, anime, whatever that have a clever mix of more adult themes, but non I found as childish as this. Didn't do an actual review here simply because I couldn't give 0 stars.

I think the negative people reviewing this are on the same borderline as the nay sayers surrounding the Saw series. They take a look at the overblown violence and view it as the main exploit of the programme and call it off as nothing but cheap, thoughtless thrills to bring in the audience.

Nothing could be further from the truth about Elfen Lied and whilst i respect your opinion, i would suggest you didn't pay much attention to detail here. Watch it fully next time.
