Sweet Soul Sketchbook,
This review is from: To Dust (Audio CD)
Make no mistake : Alice Russell can sing. She has a big beautifully
nuanced voice which inhabits the fourteen tracks on her new album
'To Dust' with formidable dexterity and a purist's understanding of
the true nature of soul. From fully-formed marvels like 'For A While',
with its stripped back teasing rhythms and deftly structured harmonies;
though the funky strut and swagger of 'Hard & Strong' and the affecting
emotional minimalism of 'I Loved You'; through small but perfectly-formed
sketches like 'Drinking Song Interlude' and 'Heartbreaker Interlude',
Ms Russell demonstrates an innate understanding of the power of economy
and restraint; when to push forward, when to hold back and (perhaps above
all) how to shape both words and melody into a perfectly coherent whole.
For my money 'Twin Peaks' is one of the finest songs you will hear this year.
This is music making of the very highest calibre. Don't let it slip through your paws!
