3.0 out of 5 stars Standard is as standard does., 27 Aug 2005
This review is from: Black Rays Defence (Audio CD)
I bought this album on an offchance as the cover was interesting and the name was kinda quirky. I can't say I'm disappointed. I was looking for a slice of indie rock and that is what I got. However the slice I got was portion-controlled and as standard as a Starbucks Latte.
From the start it is apparent that The Beat Up are simply a standard indie band. The new wave has been around 5 years and its about after this time that the blueprints start to show themselves.
The Beat Up follow all the indie rock rules as now set in plaster if not stone. The vintage fashion including cowboy hats, flat caps and beards. The intentionally childish cover art doodles. Atavistic use of guitar fuzz and loose mouthed cotton drawls. Putting the singles (Messed Up and Alright) near the start of the album so you don't lose interest. Having 10 songs when you've paid for 12+. The big fat 'The' at the start of their name. These 'quirks' are just no longer quirky enough to outquirk the quirkiest.
Okay maybe you could say they are free of gimmicks and just in it to rock and they do rock to a degree. The fact is though you could listen to the entire album and stay at a solid level of moderate rocking but except for a vocal flourish (that sounds a little bit like he's shouting 'chicken') towards the end of 'Bad Feeling' there is no real power to effect an increase in the excitement level. Maybe one of your friends will be hailing them as their new favourite band because they're not that well known but just remember they appeared on the Hollyoaks soundtrack recently. Not a good way to try and break the market respectably. Standard standard stuff.
