This review is from: Swords & Dark Magic: The New Sword and Sorcery (Paperback)
An insipid cover might detract readers from the treasures that lie within this great little collection. Considering this comprises of 17 original stories from some of the top fantasy writers about, I am surprised by how little publicity this has been receiving.
Contributions include Steven Erikson, Glen Cook, Gene Wolfe, KJ Parker, Garth Nix, Michael Moorcock, Scott Lynch, Joe Abercrombie, Robert Silverberg and Caitlin Kiernan and they vary from the good to the excellent - no fillers or poor efforts here.
What you enjoy the most will obviously depend on your taste, I liked Erikson's tale that came from a number of different perspectives, Joe Abercrombie's entry showcased the significant talent he has become (along with his sense of humour) and Scott Lynch provides the pick of the bunch with the tale of a group of magicians returning some books to a rather challenging library. Lynch is such a massive talent and this just makes you realise how much you are looking forward to his next book. KJ Parker offers her unique and gritty spin on fantasy and the others all offer you something to enjoy and make you want to re-read all their books. Some of these authors may be suited to longer works, but this does not overly show here, instead it is the opportunity to enjoy new works from some of the top writers in the field. If you enjoy the genre then this book is a must for you.

I'm going to look for this over on my side of the big blue/green/slightly brownish water. Looks like a good way to sample lots of authors I'm not familiar with. Thanks!
