Worth going through hoops to obtain this, the best season yet of this excellent show,
This review is from: Breaking Bad - The Complete Third Season (DVD)
I have been hooked on this show from the first episode. So when I reached the end of season two I was eager to get my hands on the next installment. Since I couldn't find it in region 2 (I didn't realise then that I could have got it on the German Amazon site as mentioned in other reviews) I bought a region 4 copy from an Australian seller so I could watch it on my laptop. Two weeks later it arrived and it was worth the wait.
I didn't think Breaking Bad could get any better but in the third series they cranked it up a notch. Having become culpable in Jane's death in the second series I seriously wondered whether Walt could regain my sympathy in series three. Of course neither Walt nor Jesse were ever entirely sympathetic characters - they get on the viewers' nerves as well as each other's nerves - but there nevertheless remains something compelling about the increasingly dangerous and desperate situations this unlikely pair find themselves in. Walt's wife Skyler, who to me had been somewhat flat in the first couple of series, also develops in interesting ways. And the arch-villain who slowly emerges in the third season, a different kind of threat than the pair have ever faced before, is an ingeniously drawn character.
Technically and stylistically the filming of this series is beautiful too, combining the desert landscapes with portrait shots in ways that give insight into the characters and call attention to the bleak situation. The third season makes particularly successful use of flashbacks to elaborate events from earlier in the series which had not previously been sketched out in full - such as Jesse partying with his friends and visiting the museum with Jane. Apart from anything else this device allowed us to glimpse the beautiful Jane (Krysten Ritter) one more time so gets a big thumbs up from me.
One slighly odd sequence in the series came in the episode with the fly, when I seriously worried for a moment that Walt was in danger of turning into Mr Bean. Since that sequence came to an end more than to a resolution as such (why he was behaving like that was never satisfactorily explained as far as I could make out) I am still not entirely sure what to make of it. With that very small reservation noted, I would not hesitate to recommend this series, it's the best yet of an already extraordinarily good show. And what a cliffhanger! Where can I get my hands on season 4?
