Simply flawless - a working, cloned HD in under an hour,
This review is from: Norton Ghost 14.0 (PC) (CD-ROM)
I'll describe my "journey" and hopefully you'll come to see how truly awesome this latest version of Ghost is.
I wanted to clone a 200GB IDE onto a 250GB SATA-II and got hold of a whole host of programs to try out. Acronis was the slickest looking, but had too many fiddly options for my liking. Paragon had worked for me in the past but I had a scare after one of its processes was interrupted during a boot and I had to jump through some serious hoops to get my rig back.
I was initially wary of Ghost because the versions I had seen required rebooting into a DOS-style envionment, and if anything goes wrong THERE you're in serious trouble. However, the interface was wonderfully direct: select source drive, select destination, a few options and then OK. I wanted my new drive to replace the old one, so I added "make bootable" and "copy MBR". I also gave the destination drive NO DRIVE LETTER (important). All done, I clicked OK.
First surprise: no reboot; THE CLONING PROCEDURE IS DONE ENTIRELY WITHIN WINDOWS! I cannot begin to express how reassuring it was to see a responsive Windows dialog box with a progress report. I was even able to use other programs while the cloning was being done. 58 minutes later the process was complete, so I switched off, unhooked my old hard drive, and crossed my fingers. The new SATA drive booted perfectly and was recognized as the C: drive; indeed, I am now writing this review with it mumbling away much more quietly than my old IDE screamer.
Cloning and backing up put your entire computer at the mercy of a single application, so choose wisely - Ghost gets full marks from me as far as direct cloning goes, so I'll now use it for regular backups!
