I really like this hat. The pattern is for a medium weight wool but so far I have made it in double knitting (using the hook sizes given in the pattern, the first rounds looked ridiculously lacy, but it ended up neat and very acceptable) and in a chunky wool (this needed less stitches and less rows, is bulkier and sits very comfortably). There is no lacy pattern to worry about so you can add/miss rows or increase or decrease stitches as you like.
The pattern is in American, but this is explained, and there are only 2 stitch types anyway (half treble and double, in English). The only difficulty I have had is the start. It begins with a magic circle which is not explained in the pattern. I looked it up in a book. You make a slipknot loop, then you work the stitches into the circle made by the slipknot. When you have the required number of stitches you pull the short end to close the circle up - it takes me a few goes to get the knot the right way round so that it is the short end you can pull. After that the pattern is very straightforward, although you definitely need a stitch marker to know when you have completed a round.
It uses 9mm, 6.5mm and 4.5mm hooks. I used alot less than a ball of 100g double kniitting wool to make it and just over a 100g ball of chunky wool.
