Had picked up the first and this, the second of the Ballad of Sir Benfro series, along with other books for holiday reading and found them quite enchanting. Rather different from other James Oswald items I'd already read, but equally enjoyable. I suppose they would perhaps be considered ideally aimed at older children, but, like Sally Gardener's works, are equally pleasurable for an adult to read. A good book is a good book.
The first book introduced us, in a very clever way, to the hidden world of the remaining dragons, and the link between them and the power struggles between humans. This follows on from the devastation of the dragon village and continues the tale of young Benfro as he seeks to escape and avenge the deaths of his community. The reader is drawn into his world and that of his opposite number in the human sphere, which are told in parallel, with their worlds coinciding from time to time and their destinies interlinked. There are elements of rites of passage, and the struggle between following gut instinct and thinking things through, learning how to control one's own future whilst coping with the very strong influences that pull in different directions - and learning who can be trusted.
Was quite frustrated when I got to the end of this to discover there was a third part to come and I hadn't downloaded it along with the others, so guess what I'll be doing now I'm back from holiday!
