From a huge Ubu fan - perhaps my favourite band,
This review is from: Long Live Pere Ubu (Audio CD)
Forget Ubu's illustrious history: all those greats from '78's Modern Dance through '88's Cloudland and '89's Tenement Years (ignore allmusic - wrong again) to '98's Pennsylvania.
Long Live Pere Ubu is tricksy is that it appears to infer some sort of career round-out, but it's in fact a totally miscalculated excursion into amateur theatrics. David Thomas has long had marvelous control of his intonation but here appears to believe his own hype: turning away from songs altogether to become sort of village hall interlopers who don't get asked back.
What are you doing, David Thomas? I was at one of the gigs to come from the album and had to leave midway. The performance was such a joke. A bad one, bad quality.
Okay, Why I Hate Women was a relatively weak album, but the track Texas Overture was no bad place to leave off from to pick up again with the next. No more of this garbage on Long Live... please!
