This review is from: The Birthday Boys (Paperback)
As a supporter of Scott and an owner of many, many book on the Terra Nova expedition I had hoped this would be a fascinating take on the events.
However, it is a shame that such a distinguished author as Beryl Bainbridge has fallen in to the same myths and hype that has damaged Scotts reputation.
Each Character is portrayed as a stereotypical version of themselves, Evans the rough tough jack tar etc. Worst still is the portrayal of Scott himself, an argumentative, inept leader who is quick to blame his team. Yet again we see the myth that Scott and Shackleton were deadly enemies before the latter even considered leading his own trip South.
Such a pity that a great idea has become another attack on the mans undeserved reputation.
