The House That Screamed: Great film, shame about the transfer (and the rest),
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Maneater of Hydra & House That Screamed: Elvira's [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
I bought this for 'The House That Screamed', because it's directed by Narciso Ibáñez Serrador, the man responsible for the series '6 Films to Keep You Awake' (as producer) and 'Who Can Kill a Child?'. The plot involves the mistress of a young ladies' finishing school, who has a brutal way of keeping her charges in line. Some of the girls have previously run away and never been heard of again. She has a teenage son who likes to spy on the girls showering, but seems to be truly looking for love. Then his latest girlfriend goes to meet him one night and is reported missing the next morning.
Truly unpredictable and well-plotted, what should be lush photography (see below) and a great (and beautiful) cast make for what should be a more well-known and widely appreciated horror-thriller.
Unfortunately, this print is taken from the US TV series 'Elvira's Movie Macabre' and the big-breasted one keeps popping up every time there would have been a commercial break; this is not so bad as you can just skip to the next chapter, but as I discovered about 3/4 of the way through, there seems to have been 1/2 an hour cut out of the FILM to allow these intervals and still fit the running time! Suddenly people are talking about things you have no idea about! The transfer is very grainy - it looks like it's been videotaped on a cassette that's been used a few times - the muffled sound is frequently out of sync, and the dubbing is pretty bad.
Such a shame that what should be a beautiful film has been so badly mistreated. If you want to see 'The House That Screamed' DON'T buy this version. If you can get it in its original Spanish with English subtitles, all the better.
