4.0 out of 5 stars A fine piece of work...but was Syd that good?, 11 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Syd Barrett: A Very Irregular Head (Paperback)
I echo most of the previous comments. The main plus-points of the book are simply that it is well-written with a real poetic touch at times, it is aware of the Syd myths so is able to dispel many of them with simple facts, and it is written by a true fan so is heartfelt.

Before reading this book, and having seen a couple of documentaries on Syd and the Floyd, i had the impression that he went mad around mid-1967, produced only musical scraps thereafter and had no contact with the other Floyd members for 8 years until he suddenly turned up while they were recording a song about him. In fact, his descent was gradual, he produced 2 solo albums, did a few interviews where he talked openly about his split from Pink FLoyd and had contact with Waters, Gilmour and Wright until 1970. They may not have been recording a song about him when he arrived to see them, but certainly his appearance would have been a big shock to them anyway.

Syd leaving the Floyd did seem to be inevitable due to their differing relative needs for stardom over creative freedom. Syd was already an accomplished songwriter by 1967, while the others were not particularly proficient and grew gradually into what they later became. What becomes very significant is that the instinctive guy who studied Art left the band, while the Architecture students stayed on to patiently craft epic songs without the need for sudden artistic inspiration. Too general i'm sure, but you get the idea. Of the other Floyd members, Gilmour comes across as a genuinely nice person who made sure that Syd got his royalties while the others weren't prepared to give up their pop careers to prop him up. But honestly, in their position, what would you do???

My only criticism is really that the author, as many do, seems to overstate Syd's talent and overrate his work. What is so great about the song 'Bike', which Waters thinks is 'so special'?? To me, Syd was not a major artist, he was a talent who didn't have time to develop. Unfortunately, it is an irresistable urge to perhaps elevate to a higher status those who die prematurely (John Lennon is now considered the major talent of the Beatles and Macca reduced to a glib commercial songwriter), have a serious illness (Muhammad Ali is now next to Martin Luther King as a god and black icon, please read 'Ghosts of Manila' for a more realistic appraisal from someone who was there) or illness/disappearance (Syd).

I could write more, but READ THIS BOOK instead. Well done Rob Chapman!

'What is so great about the song 'Bike'?

To answer your own question, spend a bit of time over the next few weeks trying to write a song as memorable as it.
