This review is from: Colloquial Amharic (Colloquial Series) (Audio CD)
It's hard to find good books abour Amharic, I have tried a few, and as my favourite language course publisher, Assimil, does not have an Amharic course, I hoped this book with CDs would be a good substiture. But I think it is too complicated.
First of all dialogues are pronounced too fast from the very beginning. Usually there should be, at least at the beginning, a slow reading and a fast reading of each dialogue.
Very often translations are not precise, they give you the overall meaning of a sentence but not the exact meaning of each word with explanations. This makes it very difficult to understand the use of Amharic words.
Also the book focuses too much on the written language. From the very beginning even a lot of explanations are given starting from words only written with the Amharic alphabet without an English translation or the corrisponding pronounciation written with Romar letters.
Finally, even though I love grammar, here grammar is thrown at you too fast, without enough examples from the dialogues.
