4.0 out of 5 stars USA 10 disc - UK 8 disc??......, 20 May 2011
This review is from: Stanley Kubrick: Visionary Filmmaker Collection [Blu-ray] [1962] [Region Free] (Blu-ray)
Hey, love these films to bits and have seen them many times over.If you go to the amazon.com site there are two films missing in this set as the yanks are getting Spartacus and Dr Stangelove - USA 10 Disc set - UK 8 disc??.Yes these are available seperatley but it would have been nice to have them in the UK release..If you also go to amazon.com and check out Mark Twains's review and go to permalink there is a great comment section by maelje which explains why the films in this collection are the correct aspect ratio's - worth checking out!..

I reckon that's because Spartacus is MGM and Strangelove is Sony, this is a Warners only box-set in the UK.

I think we should also consider that the US version is currently around £25 more than the UK version on Amazon.com. I'd personally much rather have the two extra films without the hassle of importing but at least they're not charging the same for both sets and you can probably get the two films for less than the difference.

Also be aware that the Shining is still the shortened European version.

Spartacus is not really a proper Kubrick film anyhow. Some scenes are his but it's basically a Kirk Douglas film with Kubrick as a hired helper. Odd because the shoe was on the other foot three years earlier with Paths of Glory.

Thanks for the info Markonesmile!. I bought the R1 DVD of The Shining back in '99 and it is the long version, complete with original Warners opening logo at the start, with scratches and original mono sound mix!.

I then later bought the first shelf-bothering R2 DVD Stanley Kubrick Collection box set, which features the shortened "remastered" version, with new WB opening logo and 5.1 mix.

I still prefer the original, I wonder if the long version is included in the US bluray set?.

Is the packaging any better than the USA version? I already have Dr. Strangelove and don't care about Spartacus.

What is the packaging like? Is it just the regular sized cases slid into a slipcase? Or are there fewer cases, or are they slimline cases?
