4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read, 10 Feb. 2005
This review is from: Chariots of the Gods : Was God An Astronaut? (Paperback)
As said in the title, it's an interesting read. I managed to read this in about a week (on the way to and from work), and I must admit, I was engrossed in it until the very end. Yes, his theories are far fetched, which, for me, in the end, were his downfall, but still, it put a different spin on things that you assumed were fact because of past, and so-called 'proven' theories.
The only gripe I have, he dismisses people who say his theories are far fetched, but in relation to the space-craft he says that crashed on earth, he says one theory is too far fetched, therefore dismisses it, tad hypocritical. (For all you interested, the theory that Daniken dismissed was that when a fireball hurtled across the sky of the Siberian Taiga, one man said that this could have been a direct result from the Krakatoa volcano eruption. This is due to the fact that this eruption sent out a large concentration of radio waves into space and the 'aliens' mistakenly took the radio waves for a signal from space, so directed a laser beam, which was far too strong, at the earth and when the beam his the earth's atmosphere high above Siberia, it had turned into matter, crashing into the surface of the earth).
Anyway, happy reading. If you're interested in learning a little bit on theories and seeing things in a different way, opening up new possibilities, get this book.

With many thousands (perhaps tens of thousands?) of years having passed since these events occurred, I doubt any of us will ever simply work out the true reason for any alien visit in the ancient past; although further clues may be found on Mars shortly?

The basic facts remain however:-

1. The great pyramids exist, as does the artificially levelled plateau/space-port at Nasca.
2. The examples of 'megalithic' stone work at Baalbek, Puma Punku and elsewhere can be seen to be the products of machine cutting/drilling.
3. Recently the amazing revelation that humanity is carrying some two hundred plus unique genes (genes without any track record in other species) which seem concentrated in the development of reason/intelligence and/or vocal ability.
4. Knowledge of electricity (Bagdad batteries), manufacture of aluminium (The Nanjing Belt), brain surgery (trepanning) and much more highly advanced knowledge was known of in the distant past.
5. The Piri Reis Map, the Orontius Finnaeus map and others show Antarctica as it would appear today, if not covered by the current ice-cap.
6. Right around the planet, ancient legends talk of 'Gods' that came down from the Heavens and created mankind.

This cannot all be fraud/hoax and lies; BUT taken together, it's evidence every bit as strong as that Charles Darwin initially brought home on the Beagle almost two hundred years ago; so why isn't today's scientific world as open to new ideas as their forefathers were in the Victorian Era?

Actually it could all be fraud/hoax/lies (and I assume you would include admitting of a n other explanation); 'taken together' I'd say it's evidence of a different order to that brought back by Darwin corroborating the nascent Theory of Evolution and bolstered by Mendel's heredity as to means. Still, I don't know if, e.g. machine cut areas ARE machine cut and I'd like to know of any research done.
I'd not trust Von Daniken though; ropey writer and 'thinker'. Yours is the only 'pro' response of any merit I have read.
