5.0 out of 5 stars Bigger in the U K, 8 April 2008
This review is from: The Piltdown Men Ride Again (Audio CD)
Probably the complete recordings by this group of Capitol sessionmen led by Lincoln Mayorga who is heard on 4 Preps singles.
McDonalds Cave was the big one here and is a rocked up version of Old McDonald had a farm-itself never far away from rock'n'roll.
The brief was the imagery of the Stone Age-while we now know the Piltdown Man was a fake this is great intrumental music on the lines of Johnny & the Hurricanes.
The last recordings made in 1962 departed from the original image with the slowed down version of Irving Berlin's A pretty girl is like a melody.
And that was more or less it until a British group called itself Sons of the Piltdown Men later in the decade.
The amazing story of the Piltdown Men began as an idea by a 4 Prep (Ed Cobb) and the pianist who played on some of their singles Lincoln Mayorga.
They demoed an instrumental called Brontosaurus Stomp and presented it to the head of Capitol-Voyle Gilmour (the same guy who kept turning down the Beatles). He turned the demo down and it was not until somebody else heard it and said they just release it that the single happenned. Its B side was McDonalds Cave and it became a hit single in the U K as did the follow up Piltdown Rides Again. The 3rd single was a rocked up version of the folk song Goodnight Ladies.
But Lincoln Mayorga was involved in other things-Ketty Lester's Love letters became a Transatlantic hit and she came to the U K with Mayorga for a series of shows where one of the support acts was the Terry Young Six who were offered a couple of Piltown Men demos one of which was Mad Goose and after their manager changed the name to the Sons of the Piltdown Men the single was licensed by Pye to its own Pye International label-usually reserved for American releases.
Ed Cobb was also involved with other things-writing songs like Tainted Love which was recorded by ex Blossom Gloria Jones.A song which would go on to greater things in the 80s
As a postscript Gloria Jones who was involved with Marc Bolan in the 70s mentioned to an interviewer that T Rex were named (as Tyrannosaurus Rex) as a nod towards the Piltdown Men
