Actually Does Work Out of the Box with BT,
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
To my surprise this modem router does indeed work out of the box on BT. Now, I say surprised but perhaps my disbelief is historical based upon my BT issues many years ago when actually doing something or using a non BT piece of gear was like performing brain surgery for the first time. Anyway, essentially, this unit is simply plugged in with the usual cables and the settings used on your BT Home Hub are inputted - not the wifi ones - and off it goes.
So coverage and speed? Better than my Home Hub with one small caveat. My BT Home Hub is the older generation unit not the latest one. If the blurb on the box is true, this should be twice as quick with better cover than my first gen Home Hub and on a par with the new Home Hub if the specs don't lie. That's pretty hard to ascertain to be honest unless you are a hard core power user who is desperate for the absolute fastest thing out there and is willing to be very picky about it. In my case I could still stream movies with my old router and I can do the same with this one and without actually running a speed test there is nothing to note between them.
There are some advantages that I have noticed. One - it looks cooler. Not that the wife cares....More importantly the coverage is better and that I do notice because there are parts of the house where the signal was not great but is much improved now. Bear in mind the picture of the antenna. They are angled for a reason. Wifi signal looks rather like a donuts in shape and whilst it might be more aesthetic to point all the ariels vertically they actually do give better cover slightly angled over. I got that from an ETO ex -radio operator.
So is it worth an upgrade? Yes if you are a BT user and have the older Home Hub and blanch at the thought of the cost of the latest hub unit which must be gold plated given the price. This unit makes a much more sensible choice as it has the same stated performance levels, is made by a well known manufacturer of quality wifi units and is much less to buy and as far as I can see works very well indeed.
