This review is from: The Green Years (Bello) (Kindle Edition)
I preferred this book to the more famous The Citadel. It is set in a small Clydeside town pre world war I and charts a young orphan boy growing up into his teen years with a family of relatives. There are some old-fashioned words used and some Scottish words that you may have to look up in the dictionary. The book has a freshness and simplicity. It explores family relationships, religion, education, town life and the poverty of working class existence. It deals well with the awkwardness of a young boy and the angst of the early teens of an intelligent lad who would like to go to university, does he make it? How could he do it?
