Unoriginal but well made,
This review is from: Total Recall (Blu-ray + UV Copy) [Region Free] (Blu-ray)
Okay so it's not original in any sense- everything in this film is something you've seen before, either in Philip K Dick's original novel, or the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, or in Minority Report, or in Blade Runner- but this is still a good, high quality sci-fi romp.
The vast majority of the film is one long chase sequence, full of complex set-pieces involving suspended cars, multi-directional cuboid lifts, slightly super-human synthetic policemen, and (naturally) explosions. This is all really well directed for maximum entertainment, the effects are good, some of the new designs have a great style, and it's set to a great soundtrack (full marks to Harry Gregson-Williams).
The cast is good. Farrell puts in a decent everyman performance, Kate Beckinsale basically plays her Underworld character (up to a point), Jessica Biel is a little more one-dimensional. Bryan Cranston (of Breaking Bad) puts on a good turn as the President, although (no spoilers) he does devolve a little into a stereotypical James Bond villain-style character in the second half. If you're a Bill Nighy fan, prepare to be disappointed- he barely appears.
As long as you don't expect too much from this movie, you'll enjoy it. Don't expect any complex philosophical conundrums or off-the-wall story twists, just enjoy it for what it is.
