A Truly GRIM Fairy Tale.,

Clear enough that this would likely be no ordinary fairy-tale with a Happy Ever After but I wasn't prepared for the ending of the main character's story. Subtly written as it is, practically glossed over, it winds up with what amounts to an emotional stomach punch. The realisation that a character I'd come to like and care about would end up as nothing more than a living doll in the hands of a prince who is ultimately a callous and selfish rapist had me close to chucking this book to the wall with disappointment. The fate that awaits Snow White is simply too cruel and repulsive to brush off as part of an otherwise elegantly twisted re-telling. This reduced it to fantasy fulfilment for rapists.
A clever, highly enjoyable book with engaging characters but not one for those who don't want their tales to end on a long, low note of hopeless abuse.
Had it not been for the nature of the ending I would have given this book 5 stars. As it ultimately ends on with such a vile prospect ahead I have to give it one. A very, very sour treat indeed.
