Although it has an impressive opening, I generally found the first third of this book a bit of a drag - and then suddenly it pulls you in and you're swept along, which makes me think DeLillo must have done something very clever because this book is about an ordinary American couple who sink into middle-class ennui and then drift into dangerous circumstances. As always, DeLillo creates powerful and vivid pictures with a few choice phrases and as with other DeLillos I have read ("Cosmopolis", "Falling Man", "The Angel Esmeralda" and "Point Omega") certain images and scenes are just burned into my mind.
