2.0 out of 5 stars Great concept, poor implementation, bad design., 12 Dec 2010
This review is from: Moleskine - Tablet Cover: Compatible With Ipad (Personal Computers)
Moleskine are the last word in portable and premium stationary with their name being synonymous with famous poets, wordsmiths, journalists, artists and pretty much any industry where pen and paper are needed. This heritage should stand them in good stead with entry into new markets and expanding their portfolio of products. Clearly the next step was to move into the ever expanding "i" sector.

With their trademark appearance, understated styling and simplistic functionality at the core of every one of their products, Moleskine should have a clear aim for this new range.
At first glance the Folio Tablet Cover looked well-built and contained every aspect that you would expect including the perfectly centralised, debossed logo on the outer side of the case and the elastic closure mechanism.

However applying these tried and tested styling components has just not worked. When the iPad is inserted into the leather insert, the leather twists and distorts and after 7 days there is no sign of this softening. Another issue that arose (with Moleskines own refill pad) was that when the folio is closed, the inner edge of the pad catches on the leather frame. This creases the edge and prevents the product from closing properly. The eye for detail has really been lost on something that should have been so utilitarian and functional. After just 2 days the spine has started to distort from the folio being folded back on itself, which would be a common practice for either writing or reading in a confined space. The slight saving grace is that the elastic strapping does keep the paper in place when inverted in such a manner.

It is admirable that the product has stuck to the traditional materials of their other product range. It would have been very easy to create this in new plastics or silicons but the Moleskine has been true to it's origins which it should be proud of.

There will be a question mark over the high price as it just can not be justified for what you receive. Personally I would have liked to see somewhere for a pen to be attached. This is not in keeping with traditional but neither is this iteration of the Moleskine and it would be extremely convenient (mostly for a stylus).

Yes I would buy a new revision of this item, but would not recommend this current state. It seems to have been rushed, untested and is relying far too heavily upon the legendary branding for sales and credibility.
