Nice but could do better??,
This review is from: Winter Songs (Audio CD)
Christmas music and heavy metal are my two favourite genres. Christmas music (done well) is mellow, melodic and should be handled with respect. Heavy Metal (done well) is exciting, melodic, and a little less respectful.
Taking a Christmas carol and thrashing about with it will hardly ever work. It might be fun to do but a pain to listen to. That does not happen here. The tunes and melodies you will recognise on this album are handled with melodious passion (Oh Holy Night, We Three Kings, What Child Is This etc) and are great. They will get played every Christmas time for ever more.
However, O Come All Ye Faithfull sounds odd. Rob's voice does not sound natural - it sounds like its been slowed down and off key. I am sure it isn't and wasn't supposed to be - but I think it's a horrible end to the album.
The other main negative is the first track - Get Into The Spirit. Totally off-kilter with the Christmas (musical) theme, this staccato-riff track sounds like it should be on Crucible. It does anything but get into the Christmas spirit.
The title track is nice and evokes a wintry feeling, but the repetition of the line "is love a lie" again seems at odds with a Christmas album. Couldn't the words have been rewritten to include mention of Santa, a sparkly star or something else??
There are a couple of other new tunes included, which are fine rock standard formats.
