1.0 out of 5 stars 'No picture comes into my head': thus, the author. I can only concur, 9 Nov. 2013
This review is from: And When Did You Last See Your Father (Hardcover)
This is an achingly slight book about two nondescript, not particularly attractive characters, one (a buffoon) the father of the other. It just so happens that the latter is (was?) a leading London literary light and while there is no reason why LLLLs should not write masterpieces - in fact one rather hopes they might - it didn't surprise me to learn from the back cover that this was the author's first essay into narrative. A piece of writing should be driven by necessity. Morrison as a poet must know this. This feels like an exercise, or possibly a stab at a New Yorker piece. Gawd help us, we even get a page of the vicar's funeral address (the vicar did not know the deceased, who in any case abhorred the Church). Oh the bathos - only imagine how Alan Bennett might have handled this! I gather it was self-help; its success must have astounded him. May conceivably appeal to those who like matters medical, though in this area (eg 'an unusually virulent or, well, *healthy* cancer') Gwyneth Lewis's scintillating, agonizing (as far as I can remember) A Hospital Odyssey is vastly to be preferred and says all that needs saying. Nouse (sic) is a howler. And how can he spill the beans on 'Aunt Beaty' without any formal acknowledgement, the metropolitan bounder? The cover photo, now that speaks volumes. Treasure the dust jacket, therefore; mulch the contents. 'What's the next job, then?' Ah, a book about his mother. Just a self-effacing walk-on here, she is the most sympathetic and I suspect the most solid character
