Excellent first official foray into the DVD market,
This review is from: Gary Numan: Hope Bleeds - Live [DVD] (DVD)
Despite being in the music business for over 25 years and now enjoying a sustained resurgence as the "godfather of electronica" this is Gary Numan's first authorised DVD release.
And it's not half bad at all. The DVD captures the entire Manchester Academy concert played in September 2003, the day after his first child was born. Cue an enthusiastic and ebullient performance that he reckons is one of (if not THE) best live performance he and his band have given. Well it's good.I was actually at the concert itself and the DVD captures the whole event well - good camerawork and and an excellent DTS soundtrack. The sound is well balanced and detailed and mixes out some of the problems had on the night itself (such as inaudible vocals). The film does showcase the big expansive, gritty industro rock behemoth that the live Numan band have become over the years. Similar to NIN, Manson et al, but with the very distinct Numan accent.
The setlist is fairly comprehensive, focusing on recent material and some of the earlier stuff from 20+ years ago.
The disc is well packaged and contains a series of interviews with all the band members and Gazza himself - this interivew being extensive and recorded several months after the concert. There's also footage of the soundcheck which is interesting only if you are either an obsessive fan or a muso.
Worth a look, and gives you an insight into where Numan is today and why he has the respect he does.
