This review is from: Slanted and Enchanted (Audio CD)
The debut from a seminal group that lasted for, well, not very long really. But that was the fate of many 'indie' bands in the 90s. Although they were more alternative than indie really. Their influence however can be seen in other great 'off-kilter' acts like the similarly short-lived Urusei Yatsura, Grandaddy and even, by mixing the sound with pop sensibilities, in other more successful acts like Snow Patrol and Biffy Clyro. Pavement were around for 5 albums and a compilation of their early material and eps. And as they progressed the less interesting they actually became. But Slanted & Enchanted still stands as a classic of the genre and of the band as well as their best work creatively, even though their subsequent albums have definite genius throughout.

The best tracks are 'Summer Babe', 'Trigger Cut', 'Zurich is Stained', 'Here' and 'Perfume-V'. But what lies inbetween is the true sound of Pavement: angular, amelodic, punky and tuneful in a tuneless way. And when they wanted to make you feel, you would FEEL. Some of these tracks have more heart than a billion X-Factor ballads.

If you enjoyed the music of the 90s, grunge and indie specifically and also American bands (American Football spring to mind as one such group heavily influenced by Pavement, but great in their own right by turning the sound into what used to be called Emo or post-hardcore but has since been bastardized by the marketing monkeys), have an interest in the history of music and appreciate a song written with passion and intelligence, this album is for you.
