HUGELY WELCOME RETURN,
This review is from: Songs For Persephone (MP3 Download)
I've been a fan of Mimi Goese's ethereal, otherwordly voice since her days with HUGO LARGO (nice to see their two albums now re-issued.) It's been 13 years since her masterpiece SOAK, which must rank amongst the most criminally overlooked and under-appreciated albums of the last two decades.
But it's been worth the wait.
Despite slightly lacking the dynamism and power that former producer Hahn Rowe added to her pallette, Ben Neill makes for an intriguing collaborator. There's occasionally a more 'noodly' lyrical tendency this time out, and Neill's trumpet acts sometimes more as a liability than an asset, but overall the two produce a unique, shimmering and gorgeously textured sound across a wide range of styles, and Goese's voice is as clear, soaring and moving as ever.
I wasn't quite sure what to make of it at first, but this one's a grower. The more you play it, the better it gets. The opening and closing tracks alone are worth the price. If anyone new to her music buys this, and from there buys SOAK, then so much the better.
A very welcome return from a very under-rated artist.
