4.0 out of 5 stars A slightly blunt edge, but does the job, 27 May 2011

This review is from: Guild Wars: Edge of Destiny (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought this book, and the follow-up - Guild Wars: Ghosts of Ascalon, as an avid player of Guild Wars Complete Collection, and a lover of fantasy books.

There are two reasons that this book was written, in my opinion.:
1) As a link between the current game and the upcoming Guild Wars 2.
2) To provide a fun, original reading experience in the GW universe.

For the first, it succeeds admirably well. There is enough link to the game to provide a player with a sense of follow-on, and describes the important events before the sequel game so as to send the adventurers into the new story. It even fills in some questions from before the first game.

It is on the second that it starts to fail for me. The book is written well, which does please me in this current fad of fast-paced but poorly written fiction. There are no extraneous items or descriptive passages, and you are told what you need to know. Fantastic! I am sick of being told, in the middle of a gunfight, that the room our protagonist has ran into has Edwardian sinks, which then do not have any relevance to the rest of the story. What did strike me was the generic plot. There are hundreds of similar books out there where aside from detail, the plot runs similarly. Now this book is constrained more than others - the history and future are already set and known, but we could have had a little more in theway of originality.

So, if you are looking for a link between the two GW games, it is a definite must. If it is a good read you are after, this book is as good as most, and better than some.
