This review is from: Saint Bartlett (Audio CD)
Damien Jurado is a singer/songwriter from Seattle.
He has a catlogue of fine albums stretching back
to his 1997 debut 'Waters Ave S'. His last release
'Caught In The Trees' (2008) was an absolute hoot!
Do take time to discover such little wonders as the
jolly 'Gillian Is A Horse' and the perfect heartbreaking
beauty of 'Last Rights'. Mr Jurado has the ability
to cover all emotional bases with quiet confidence.

His new opus 'Saint Bartlett' is a collection of
twelve new songs brought to life in an impeccably
bleak production by Richard Swift. Dazzling despair!
The general mood maintains the bitter-sweet ambience
which has long been his hallmark. This is not to say
that Mr Jurado is a miserable soul. One listen to the
haunting miniature 'Pear' demonstrates his ability to
turn even the most melancholy material into something
quite magical in its stripped-down intensity.

'Rachel & Cali' is another darkly-hued highlight.
A tale of profound existential insecurity played out over
a gently jangling guitar and bass motif. (The spirit of
John Martyn may well have been watching from the wings).

'Cloudy Shoes' is a very curious confection. Mr Jurado
sings sadly into the woods and a disembodied being, who may
or may not be Yogi Bear, echoes back his plaintive entreaties.
It is a deeply disconcerting (and mildly amusing) invention.

'The Falling Snow' is a chillingly bleak arrangement for
barroom piano, big drums and ghosts-in-the-attic harmonies.
The little warmth generated by the central refrain is not
enough to prevent his breath from hanging frozen in the air.

Final track 'With Lightening In Your Hands' is simply sublime.

The world Mr Jurado creates is not always easy one to share.
His vision may be uncomfortably stark at times but
I'll take this kind of substance over style any day!

Recommended.
