4.0 out of 5 stars US albums box set, 20 Jan 2014
This review is from: The US Albums (Audio CD)
I'm a bit disappointed that the original US stereo mix of 'I'm Only Sleeping' hasn't been used on the 'Yesterday and Today' CD included in this set. This mix is still only available on the unofficial 'Alternate Revolver' CD and later vinyl editions.

Unfortunately, it's errors like this that let down an otherwise very good collection.

There are several US mixes that were left off this set and replaced with 2009 UK remasters. What is the point of that ? I have the mono & stereo box sets, now I want a complete US mono/stereo box and they didn't come through. I was pleased with the Capitol Albums 1 & 2, and only wanted a 3rd and 4th volume to follow. I would have only been buying this set for the packaging ...which I didn't.

Yes I've also got the Capitol volumes 1 & 2 (as well as several US vinyl editions, all the UK vinyl editions in mono & stereo and the mono & stereo CD box sets) and even though they contain 'fake' stereo versions etc, they are at least faithful to the original.

As you say, what's the point of replacing the US versions with the UK equivalent in a US box set!

I'd have to agree on this point as the word was that all unique mixes would be respected. As you say, this is an error.

It's really money-making hype for the 50th anniversary. They know people will be suckered in by the elaborate packaging. I fell for this with the mono / stereo box sets in 2009, but knowing I was getting the authentic UK mixes and I was happy with those. The US mixes should have been respected, and this would have been a perfect release.

The original Stereo Y+T I'm Stereo was fake stereo, that is why you have the UK Stereo mix in its place. The Capitol fake stereo was sourced from the Mono version which does appear in the set in Mono. 1980's pressings of Y+T did have I'm only Sleeping in another unique US mix, but since it was not an original Y+T mix, it has not been included in this set.

OK, I hear what you're saying, but wouldn't it have been logical to include that unique US stereo mix in a US box set, in preference to the UK stereo mix which is readily available in the UK Revolver CD?

If everything else about the US box set was 'as original', then I could understand the decision not to include this unique mix.

I'm sure that lots of fans out there would be interested in hearing the differences in the backwards guitar sections of this relatively rare version. In my opinion those fans should expect to hear it here, rather than having to seek it out elsewhere!
