Worth the money?,
This review is from: Garmin Oregon 550T Handheld GPS System (Electronics)I've had this GPS for a month now, and I'm still struggling to get it to do what I want. For what its worth, I do understand GPS - and have sets in car and boat - but I still can't get my head round the features on this. The whole system seems counter- intuitive, and the instruction manuals are (and this is being generous) worse than useless - the on line guide is appalling. It has lots of unusual features, which presumably work well, but they seem to have forgotten the basic functions - and I don't really care about hunting and fishing information!
It isn't quick to pick up the satellites, and seems to need a significant constellation before functioning - it doesn't, for example, work where the one in my car does.
If you're going to use a GPS for anything more serious than a gentle wander, then don't forget you'll be into at least another £100 to buy the relevant mapping chips.
All in all, I'm not sure its worth the money.

Sorry, but when I read review comments like this I have to really puzzle over the worth of the reviewers comment? I mean, who goes out and blows what is effectively £400 [with extra maps] or more on a piece of electronics and doesn't bother to look into what it can actually functionally do first? And as for going out on a gentle wander, um? Why would anyone even need a gps is beyond me.

You can get FREE maps of the UK from Talkytoaster.info
A 5 second search on google would tell anyone that you don't need to pay for Garmin maps.

More sense than money. I've been looking for a new GPS for a while. I can't stand SatMap because it's pretty much bunk outside the UK aside from some shonky downloads. Most of the bad reviews often strike me as people who don't really know what they're buying or what exact purpose they're buying them for. You know what they say in the IT world Garbage in Garbage Out.
