Reflective and quiet follow up for Lambchop,
By A Customer
This review is from: Is a Woman (Audio CD)
I wondered how Lambchop could follow Nixon but they have done so in beautiful fashion. Totally understated, sparse, lovely, transcendental, with Kurt Wagner's voice the fragile but towering centrepiece of the whole record, set against a backdrop mostly of cocktail bar piano, tentative acoustic guitar, gentle percussion and the occasional pedal steel blowing on through like a breeze at dusk.
Too many highlights to mention, I agree it is an immediate classic rather than a grower. I couldn't think of anyone else who could have done Nixon and no-one else who could have done Is A Woman. The soul that the music comes from feels so similar, yet the style is so different - Nixon is among my all time favourite albums and yet I can't imagine hearing a follow-up so unlike it and still being this overjoyed with it. Lambchop's and particularly Wagner's unique and special place in the history of music is, with this collection, now assured. There is no excuse - you MUST have it.
