DT's review of Wrecks and Reefs of SE Scotland,
This review is from: Wrecks & Reefs of Southeast Scotland: 100 Dives from the Forth Road Bridge to Eyemouth (Paperback)
I'm not going to go into detail about what's contained in the book, Mike does that with a wonderful, vibrant and fresh style. However, having said that, I was impressed right at the beginning of the book with Mike's intro particularly the explanations of his "Diver Experience" descriptions used throughout in each of the Guides, printed with kind permission of BSAC, as he uses BSAC diver qualification titles. This should help individual divers ascertain whether some of the dives are suitable for themselves at their own current experience level. Nice touch.
Each of the Guide Sections are preceded by a fine map of the local area which even the worst of Map Readers among us can easily find or locate the shore dive sites on any OS map (or indeed, some road maps too), where GPS co-ordinates aren't listed.
Reading further into and through this book I can't help thinking that it's not simply a dive guide book of the South East of Scotland.
No, with his enthusiasm for diving these waters so obviously coming thro in his words and fantastic pictures almost tangibly encouraging divers of all grades to get out and try these sites, I'm also seeing Mike the BSAC Advanced Instructor coming through. It's almost like reading a Diver Training Manual (with more real-life diving) at times with the huge wealth of good advice, information and suggestions coming thro in the guides. A "Diver Training Manual" that I'm sure would/will have a rush of new and excited students and progressing divers contacting their local clubs to further their experiences should they be lucky enough to have this book amongst their Christmas presents... ;-)
Reading thro Mike's book certainly lifted the gloom of a windblown, rain soaked day away and has whetted my appetite for East Coast diving.
I'm wondering where the next one will be... I'll buy it too!
