This review is from: Northern Soul: An Illustrated History (Hardcover)
As per my tittle the book seemed to go from outlining the origins of Northern Soul to a series of peoples recolections. Some seemed more interested in the drug scene which caused the closure of many top venues than talking about the music its self. The music was and is the attraction for me and I wasn't impressed that there was no detail on the various style and labels that make up thre strange world that gets called northern soul.
I guess I was slightly disapionted if honest!

Actually a very valid comment on this book which I've just read. It's an enjoyable read and a fascinating account of a period of British social history which for me doesn't go far enough. Maybe the space is there for another book and for someone else to take things further.
I d have been interested in the technical aspects for example what sort of record decks, amplifiers and so on were used in the clubs the book describes during the sixties and seventies? my clubbing days were in the eighties and nineties, state of the art sound and light systems and so on.
Other aspects are not explored or example Northern soul had a big gay following, I m not saying the northern soul scene is a gay scene but its clearly a scene where gay men felt at home. The book acknowledge Ian Levine went on to DJ at Heaven nightclub but I felt this aspect might have been explored further.
In short, I'd have liked a bit more critical analysis, a bit more depth but that's just me, this is still a fine book, a history of northern soul, not the only and I m sure not the final history but a great little piece of social history nonetheless.
