An original, now stolen,
This review is from: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy : Complete BBC Series [DVD] (DVD)I have to agree with other reviewers who say the BBC/Paramount version of Tinker, Tailor outclasses that of the latest large screen offering. The new film is also a slow burner - but one so anticlimatic that you go away asking 'was that it?'
The DVD is no high resolution transfer but somehow the low resolution grit fits many of the grubby, unkempt scenes. In the film version you think 'great cast' but this is let down by poorly paced scripting and flat direction; in the BBC version you just realise how brilliant the cast, the script and direction are and they all work together. Just to take one of the performances as an example, Hywell Bennett is much more convincing as a Circus field agent than his film actor counterpart.
I recommend if you have never seen this version and just come away from a deflated sense of being robbed at the box office to get this at a fraction of the price and see how it should have been done - but impossible in a 2-3 hour feature film.
