4.0 out of 5 stars Fate Dogs Mr Steiger, 17 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Across the Bridge [DVD] [1957] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Distinct whiffs of Hitchcock in a first-rate first half loses some impetus once we reach Me-hi-co. It begins with the Rank Gong and Rod Steiger's name so if you were unaware of it, and with the 1950s cars roaring through black and white London, you think it's going to be one of those US star vehicles which was destined to be pretty mediocre. But wait, it's very different and all set in convincing Texan border locations and a dusty Mexican town (it was done in Spanish locations apparently). The bridge itself and the towns all contribute to suggesting this could easily pass for a US-home grown noiry thriller. The little giveaways are the occasionally unconvincing accent and some rather pale and thinly moustachioed policemen and dodgy accents. Oh and Bernard Lee as the Scotland Yard detective smugly suggesting at one point that Mexican police are pretty corrupt. This at a time when half of the met were taking dosh from London gangland (allegedly). Steiger is utterly right as the shifty and self-confident naturalised British post-war Cherman businessman. The other hint that it's going to be quality is Graham Greene's name of course and the themes of guilt and redemption and fate are all present in an entertaining way. Dolores is a great actress. Annakin an interesting director at this stage, certainly, and as others have said, rather unjustly neglected like so much else from the period.
