This review is from: Fat Chancer (Paperback)
Most financial journalists, I feel, just don't really get the City while most City people couldn't write if their lives depended on it. Richard Old shows in this book he knows the equity business inside out and can write in an entertaining, frequently hilarious and still informative way. These characters are real, it's horrifying to think this piece of fiction may not be too far off the truth. You'll need a basic level of understanding of the City to keep up with the plot, but the author explains things well and has some very interesting footnotes at the bottom of the page where necessary - I learned a lot from these. But mainly I was cackling at the gags and stories told along the way. The thing he has about social class, I'll admit I don't quite get it, after all he says he stayed there 24 years but it's a quirk about UK stockbrokers that I never gave a second thought too, and in this book, the Public School W*&£(@! , or PSWs, get a good skewering and that's satisfying and funny as hell. Good effort this, a new angle on the City and the financial crisis with added humour. I'll be looking out for more from this author. Why 5 stars? I can't put it down.
