Since their resurgence from 1999's `Californication', the Chilis have enjoyed renewed mainstream success yet continued to push the envelope at every turn. 'By The Way' (although not to everyone's tastes) saw a band making a radical departure from their funk-rock roots to a more Beatles/Beach Boys sound. Whilst 2006's double album 'Stadium Arcadium' saw the band go for overkill attempting to tap into every influence under the sun. Five years on the band are back with their tenth opus minus mainstay guitarist John Frusciante with Josh Klinghoffer taking up guitar duties. Introducing a new member can sometimes breed new life into the band in a creative sense. Regrettably, this fails to materialise on 'I'm With You' as Klinghoffer's input seems limited consisting of a three man band plus one to fill in the gaps (which is shame given Klinghoffer's CV). Furthermore, the Hendrix-on-fire solos are amiss and the songs just generally lack bite or just aren't that memorable. Overall, the songs resonate closer to 'Stadium Arcadium' than 'Blood Sex Sugar Magic' but almost feel they've been lifted from the cutting room floor. 'I'm With You' is by no means a bad album, it's one that ambles along safely within the confines of coffee table rock but it's definitely one that you could do without.
