APPEARS TO BE UP TO THE JOB,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: [HEAVY-DUTY] Spigen iPhone 5 / 5S Case Protective [Tough Armor][Metal Slate] Dual Layer EXTREME Protection Cover Heavy Duty Case for iPhone 5 (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Ok I will admit to being an Otterbox fan, but with the new iPhone 5s having a fingerprint reader some of the more bulky cases prevent access to the Home button.
I would also like to point out that my last iPhone 5 spent its life inside an Otterbox Defender case and when it was removed I found a couple of deep scratches on one corner of the phone. I assume this happened when I dropped the phone and the plastic inner skeleton had a couple of rough edges and caused it. The finish of the Otterbox cases is not always that great.
On to this one, it has a quality feel to it, the plastic feels sturdy and does not appear to peel back like some silicon rubber cases. Another plus is that the case is nowhere near as bulky as some, but I would recommend using a screen and back protector with any case. Sometimes bits of grit can get in under the edges and damage the phone.
Take the aluminium back cover off, instal the phone and clip the cover back in place, fitting takes less that a minute. It feels as if it is up to the job though the Achilles heel will always be the exposed screen. The real benefit is that the case has very little bulk, whereas other cases may leave you feeling as if you are carrying two phones in your pocket this one does not. It certainly gives a better grip than the Otterbox commuter cases plastic clip-on back which leaves it a bit slippery. The Otterbox Defender though gives a better hold.
All phone cases are a compromise, bulk verses protection and you have to weigh up what you need and what suits your lifestyle.
My only issue was with the aluminium clip-on back on the previous case I bought for my wife. It scratched quite easily and I said it would be nice if these covers could be purchased separately maybe even with some crazy designs rather than dull colours. I also said that I'd love the aluminium back to be more rubberised to give an even better grip. Still for some a few battle scars on the outer cover gives it a bit more kudos but good news. The Smooth Black Aluminium back has a coating on it that is grippy and feels rubberised. It is also less prone to scratched. Excellent.
