In the late 1960's this was,for me, the best Joan Baez album. An broad mix of content confidently sung in that beautiful voice. The arrangements were more ambitious and assured than earlier material, though not overly complex.
There are some lovely pieces here: Byron's 'So we'll go no more a roving' for example is perfect; nobody else need record it. There are also some very poignant songs like 'Birmingham Sunday'; this song is pitched perfectly to bring home in a quiet, almost understated way, the cruelty, horror and futility of the bombing of a baptist chapel that killed four little girls.
All of the songs are superbly sung.
Although there have been may excellent albums from Joann Baez since, this one, for me, is still the best
