Well worth the wait....,
This review is from: Don't Stop (Audio CD)
It's nice to sometimes move away from your comfort zone and this is miles away from where I usually am. Although I do have a pop history as an avid fan of the likes of Duran Duran and A-ha, I have kind of grown out of 'pop' as a rule and at 35 years old and now into more alternative/indie/rock music I thought that my pop days were at an end. I was wrong! I have had a soft spot for Annie since hearing the wonderful 'Chewing Gum' a few years back, a real pop gem. 'Don't Stop' is a simply a great pop album at its very best. Annie is so underrated and it remains a mystery why she hasn't made it big. What makes Annie unique is that she is pop but with an edge. She produces memorable hooks and pounding beats with sing-a-long choruses for the masses. Annie writes her own songs with the help of the likes of Richard X, Paul Epworth [Bloc Party, Primal Scream, Florence and the Machine] and the hit masters Xenomania, she has produced an album that just puts a smile on your face. Add into the mix guitar provided on two tracks from Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos on the stunning new single 'My Love Is Better' and 'Loco' its clear than Annie isnt just pop by numbers. There are a number of tracks here that are ready for the Top 10, 'I Don't Like Your Band' and 'Songs Remind Me Of You' are nailed on hits in an ideal world. 'Marie Cherie' and 'Take You Home' are simply sublime, and out of nowhere 'The Breakest Song' is absolutely bonkers!! and will probably be snapped up by well known cereal company for a TV ad anytime soon. 'Bad Times' and album closer 'Heaven and Hell' sound like St. Etienne at their best. There is nothing to fault here, this is just a great enjoyable pop album. The only mystery for me with the album was that last years fabulous singles 'I Know UR Girlfriend Hates Me' and 'Anthonio' were both missing from the album!? However, there is some good news! There is Limited Edition 2CD set of the album and on the bonus CD you get both of these tracks! as well as three other tracks.
