This review is from: Contraband [DVD] (DVD)If your a fan of humerlous crime thrillers such as Michael Manns Miami Vice or Heat, then there may be some comparison to draw here.
The film has similar heist scenes on armoured trucks, smuggling in shipping containers, a few well filmed gun shoot outs and a few twists and double crosses along the way.
Mark Whalberg as actor and producer has surrounded himself with a cast of very well known actors who raise the standard of what is essentially a pretty run of the mill thriller, although it is well made.
Whalberg plays the ex smuggler turned good, trying raise his family in an honest fashion, but is roped into the good old movie cliche of one last job to help out his brother in Law.
Giovanni Ribisi plays the local gangster who he's up against to repay a debt, whilst Kate Beckinsale plays the supporting wife role.
All three are on fine form and deliver good performances, it's just a slight shame that the film is so generic, and leaves you with feeling you've seen it all before but done better.
Not bad, worth a watch, but no modern crime classic.
